Hidden history: People once sent flowers to insult enemies, compliment friends, propose marriage

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:57:38 GMT

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – For a moment, pretend that you're living during the Victorian Era and the person you're crushing on has just sent you flowers. He must like you, right?Wrong. This artwork, which represents the meaning of the Yew, was included in Language of Flowers, 1884, printed in London. The Victorians were a bit dark. They didn't just send flowers to commemorate important events, as we do today. They also sent flowers to tell someone they hated them. Victorians were good at being passive-aggressive. The way they used flowers was often a polite way of being cruel, so if you're curious about the meaning of your favorite flowers, keep reading. The Victorians sent flowers with hidden meanings-- but here's the catch. You could only decipher the meaning of a bouquet if you had a flower dictionary. So if you didn't know there was such a thing as a flower dictionary, you could spend your whole life receiving flowers and thinking you were popular when, in fact, you were loathed...

New St. Paul school board — with 3 new members — will face challenges in 2024

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:57:38 GMT

When three new members join the board in charge of St. Paul Public Schools in January, they’ll face significant challenges right away. The school district, which has 33,000 students and a $1 billion budget, will face not only a $150 million shortfall in the coming year as federal pandemic aid ends but also contract negotiations with the St. Paul Federation of Educators. There’s already a major gap between what the union is asking for and what the district is willing to spend on pay in the future. SPPS says it’s set aside a little more than $12 million for increases, while an early, incomplete estimate from the district found union asks could total at least $106 million. Teachers nearly went on strike in 2022 when the union and district positions were closer together.“They’re not coming into this placid scene where they have time to absorb, to evaluate, to bring their own good judgment to the table and to try to figure these things out,” said former St. Paul school board member J...

ST. LOUIS - Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League MVP, could become a free agent next year if the St. Louis Cardinals don't come through with a contract extension. Now 36 years old, Goldschmidt has one more season remaining on a five-year, $130 million contract that took effect in 2020. To date, it remains the richest contract the Cardinals have offered to a position player in franchise history, and it's held up fairly well. Paul Goldschmidt has been a mainstay amid some major roster changes in recent years, also averaging around 30 home runs, 100 RBI and a .286 batting clip at a full-season pace with St. Louis. FOX 2 Cardinals podcast: Three new pitchers… More to come? Where do the St. Louis Cardinals go from here? Derrick Goold, lead Cardinals beat writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, noted at the end of the 2023 season that Goldschmidt and the Cardinals at least intend to discuss a potential extension. Kickin’ It with Kiz: Sportsperson of year? Around here, it’s Joker over Prime. No contest.

CU football coach Deion Sanders is 100% deserving of being named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year. Coach Prime took a team that was all but dead nationally and put the Buffs back on the map. He made them relevant. The record wasn’t great, but Deion said he knew the Buffs weren’t close to where they needed to be.Dan-O, duly impressedKiz: Well, there’s no doubting Prime is a sportsperson of our time, where clicks count more than touchdowns and it’s not whether you win or lose, but how many eyeballs watch on television. With the same self-aggrandizing approach Sanders celebrates, I’m proud to be among the first journalists to emphasize the social change he could foster in Boulder was far more important than were the Buffs finished in the Pac-12 standings. So I have a fine appreciation for Prime being a sportsperson whose impact extends beyond the field of play. But if we’re keeping score that way, Sanders can’t touch Muhammad...

MARTINEZ — After two full days of deliberation, a Contra Costa jury convicted an Oakley man of murdering a 21-year-old man due to jealousy on Valentine’s Day 2020.Jose Quintanilla, 27, was convicted Friday of first degree murder, an enhancement for lying in wait, and another enhancement for personal use of a firearm. Prosecutors say he plotted with co-defendants Sabrina Glenn and Angel Rodriguez to set up the victim, Brentwood resident David Olivares, based on a belief that Olivares had sex with Quintanilla’s wife.During trial, Quintanilla’s lawyers asked the jury to convict him of conspiracy to commit robbery but said Quintanilla had no involvement in any murder plot. Jurors did just the opposite; they convicted Quintanilla of murder but acquitted him of robbing and conspiring to rob Olivares.Quintanilla allegedly told Glenn that Olivares had sexually assaulted a family member and used another lie to get Rodriguez on board with the plot, telling them both he...

Trump and DeSantis are at dueling campaign events in Iowa with the caucuses just six weeks away

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis plans on Saturday to complete his campaign promise to visit each of Iowa’s 99 counties, a timeworn tactic for presidential candidates hoping to make their mark in the leadoff state over months mingling with voters at the state’s diners, cookouts and Pizza Ranches. But the Florida governor’s moment, like much of his campaign, will take place under the towering shadow of former President Donald Trump.Around the same time DeSantis is set to take the stage Saturday afternoon in Newton, Iowa, Trump will be addressing cheering supporters about 100 miles away in Cedar Rapids. Just six weeks are left before the Jan. 15 Iowa caucuses, which DeSantis has said he “absolutely” expects to win. He’s bet his campaign on the state, winning key endorsements from Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and high-profile evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats.“He’s showing up,” Reynolds said in an interview. “He’s not just landing, doing an event and heading out...
