How local weather apps connect you with a real meteorologist

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:40:09 GMT

ST. LOUIS -- It seems like everyone is trying to drop an app on us, from the grocery store to the department store to the gas station. Most are very helpful, but a weather app can help you plan for the unexpected when you’re not around a TV, and it could save your life."I mainly use it when I’m on the road. I travel to nine counties. Everywhere from Quincy to Jacksonville over to Hillsboro down to Greenville to Madison County. I like to keep an eye on the weather," said Michael Douglas, Illinois fire prevention inspector. "When severe weather happens and your signal drops, cable goes out, dish goes out, you have your cell phone 99% people do, you can count on the app running."Another great use of the app is at sporting events. Douglas says that he uses it to see when weather is coming and when to get kids off the field. Arrest made in deadly Clayton shooting “Our app connects to our local weather computers, and our meteorologists have a role in making the forecast that goes to our...

New dataset helps discern climate changes from local weather

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:40:09 GMT

ST. LOUIS -- A first-of-its kind dataset is now available to the earth system science community. CONUS 404 is a high-resolution weather simulation that spans more than four decades over the continental United States.Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research partnered with the US Geological Survey to develop this new resource, allowing researchers to look at weather on local scales but over a climate timescale. The simulation took an entire year on a supercomputer. A scientist on the project, Andreas Prein, says there are hundreds of applications for this data. He’s personally interested in how extremes are changing over time."I looked at extreme rainfall and how it’s changing. I looked at the extreme winds and how they were changing. How does snowpack in the western US change over time?" said Prein. The 40-year dataset allows scientists to discern changes in climate versus daily weather. This makes it easier to understand how these changes could impact a region. The e...

California’s Dungeness crab season delayed again

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:40:09 GMT

On Friday, the California Fish and Wildlife Department ordered another delay in the commercial Dungeness crab fishing season — the second so far this winter. The risk of whales becoming tangled in crab fishing gear remains high for most of the coastal waters from the Mendocino County line south to the Mexican border, director Charlton H. Bonham announced. In the far north, where crabbing was supposed to be allowed starting Dec. 1, there’s a second issue: Testing in Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties revealed poor crab meat quality. The next assessment will take place on or around Dec. 7. The earliest that commercial crabbing could begin in the far north would be Dec. 16, state officials said. Also Friday, the restrictions on recreational crabbers, who had been given the go-ahead in many parts of the state so long as they used hoop nets and crab snares and not traps, were extended to include those far north counties. That new restriction goes into effect Nov. 26.This...
