Good thing for the Chicago Cubs they say their focus is on the road ahead.Because objects in the rearview are a lot closer than they appear. When struggling Cubs starter Jameson Taillon and beleaguered reliever Michael Fulmer blew the lead in an 8-5 loss to the Reds at Wrigley Field Saturday night, it dumped the Cubs behind both the Reds and Cardinals into last place in the National League Central. So much for $300 million offseasons.“It’s been tough. The results definitely haven’t been great,” said $68 million free agent Taillon, who was talking about the slumping Cubs and their 10-22 slide since a high-water mark of 12-7, but who might as well have been talking about his own 8.04-ERA struggles since signing a four-year contract.Saturday’s instant splat from third to last in the five-team, second-tier division might not spell doom and gloom on Memorial Day weekend in the context of a 2023 season that has four months to go (no matter how much of a case th...Motorcyclist hurt in Mission Bay crash

INDIANAPOLIS — While there are some things that are different from his first time at the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," there are two things that certainly haven't changed for a driver from Burr Ridge. David Malukas will take part in his second Indianapolis 500 Sunday and is proud to represent Chicagoland as he joins the 33-car grid for the famed motorsports event."All around, my team, myself, we're all Chicago based," said the 21-year-old driver. "It feels like we're bringing that Chicago home into Indy. I feel like it's really nice that the whole Chicago people have a certain car they can go for."Yet the greatest motivation for Malukas remains his family - especially the person who has been with him every step of the way and plays a big part in getting him on the track."Every time we leave circuit, me and my dad, we always look each other in the eye and just can't believe it, we're actually here," said David of his father, Henry Malukas, in an interview with WGN News Now before t...Late Houston goal sinks Austin FC in Copa Tejas battle

HOUSTON (KXAN) - After winning their previous two MLS matches, Austin FC was unable to keep the streak going against the Houston Dynamo. The Verde and Black struck first but ultimately fell 2-1 Saturday night on the road.Gyasi Zardes opened the scoring with a header into the corner of the net in the 22nd minute off an impressive cross from Nick Lima. The goal for Zardes was the 100th of his MLS career. The veteran has now scored in three straight MLS games.Houston quickly adjusted to try to even things up and succeeded in the 37th minute with their captain Héctor Herrera. A cross was deflected in the box and Herrera came across the middle, knocking it into the back of the net past Austin FC Goalkeeper Brad Stuver. Both teams had some chances the rest of the first half but entered the break even at one. The second half brought about another injury for the visitors; something they haven't been able to avoid this season.Earlier in the week, it was announced that a key member of the back...Texas lawmakers pass bill aimed at Veterinary Board

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas lawmakers voted to temporarily attach the state's Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners to another state agency, in order to help with data collection and management issues. The legislation, Senate Bill 1414, stems from a review earlier this year by the Sunset Advisory Commission, which found "unreliable and inconsistent" practices persisted at the Board in charge of regulating the state's animal doctors. Over the last six years, prior Sunset reviews had already highlighted similar problems. Explore: KXAN investigates the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners In 2022, KXAN investigators discovered a backlog of complaints and dozens of disciplinary documents missing from the agency’s public licensee look-up website, which could prevent pet owners from seeing a veterinarian’s disciplinary history. In March 2023, a new executive director at the agency told KXAN it made improvements over the last six months, reducing the backlog of cases and approving ...Minnesota Aurora post another shutout, 4-0, over Chicago

Growing up in Stevens Point, Wis., St. Paul Saints right-handed relief pitcher Austin Schulfer dreamed of playing major league baseball.OK, so it was with the Chicago Cubs, but his allegiance shifted in 2018 when the Twins selected him in the 19th round of the draft out of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. And, like the number of family members and friends who regularly make the drive west to CHS Field to see him play, Schulfer is warming to teams that play on the other side of the border.“Fortunately for Minnesota fans, I’m not a Packers fan,” Schulfer said prior to the Saints’ 14-1 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Saturday night.“When I was growing up my dad was a (San Francisco) 49ers fan. But I am a Badgers fan, so there is the Gophers/Badgers thing. But I think it’s fun. And I’ll play both sides. If I’m at a Gophers game I’ll cheer for the Gophers — as long as they aren’t playing the Badgers.”The 27-year-old Schulfer’s dream appears close to coming to fruition.
