At first blush, a French zombie comedy directed by the guy who won an Oscar for directing The Artist, in 2011, sounds like four cats fighting in a bag — a hard sell in the blockbuster-heat-stroke summer zone. But Michel Hazanavicius’s Final Cut (Coupez!, in French) is in fact more than that, as well as a little less. Nothing if not an earnest ironist who loves making movies about making movies (the last film of his we saw here was 2017’s very unserious Mon Amour Godard), Hazanavicius has come up with an inspiring trifle, paying smirking homage not to a cinema master but to the hacks and fools at the shallowest end of the film industry talent pool. But it’s hardly an original auteur flourish, either — Final Cut is, in fact, a letter-by-letter remake of a Japanese film, Shin’ichirō Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead (2017), which detailed the ill-fated film shoot of a zombie thriller, to be shot and performed all in a single roving 30-minute shot and broadcast live on a virtual platform. That ...San Jose business owner arraigned on insurance fraud felonies

SAN JOSE – The proprietor of a San Jose roofing company is facing charges he falsified information for his employees to avoid insurance premiums, according to prosecutors.Charlie Duong, the 64-year-old owner of CD All Roofing, was arraigned Monday on insurance fraud felonies, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. He faces jail time if convicted.Reached by phone following the hearing, Duong said he had no comment on the case. The alleged $460,000 scheme came to light after Duong’s second-in-command was killed in a crash while returning from a job on June 19, 2020, according to prosecutors.Duong reportedly asked an employee who survived the collision to falsely tell investigators the victim had just started working for the company and was only part-time, the district attorney’s office said. The survivor refused and told investigators the victim was in fact an eight-year employee who worked six days a week.In addition, Duong also allegedly tried to sh...After COVID-era fall, childhood immunizations are rising again

By Jacqueline Howard | CNNMillions of children around the world missed routine childhood vaccinations against diseases such as measles, diphtheria and tetanus during the Covid-19 pandemic, but new data suggests that this decline may be reversing.Globally, 4 million more children worldwide received routine childhood immunizations last year than in the previous year, according to estimates released Monday by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).“As opposed to what we were having over the last two years, which was a continued decline of coverage across several countries, this year we see an uptick,” said Dr. Ephrem Lemango, associate director of immunization at UNICEF.The number of children who missed all of their routine immunizations fell from 18.1 million in 2021 to 14.3 million last year. Yet that number has not returned to or dropped below what was seen before the pandemic, as 12.9 million children missed all of their vaccinations in ...Former Sharks forward Kaut says Barracuda coach pressured him to fight

A former San Jose Sharks forward said he was pressured by a coach with the team’s AHL affiliate to fight opposing players, adding that it was a key factor in his decision not to re-sign with the organization.Martin Kaut, whom the Sharks acquired from Colorado in January, told the Czech website iDNES.cz in a story published Sunday that an unnamed Barracuda coach would choose an opponent, usually a fellow Czech-born player, before each game for him to fight. When Kaut refused, he said the coach responded by saying that his refusal was a reason why he wasn’t in the NHL.Kaut specifically said he was asked to fight Adam Klapka, who is listed at 6-foot-8 and 235 pounds and was credited with six AHL fighting majors this past season for the Calgary Wranglers. Kaut, listed at 6-2 and 190 pounds, has only two fighting majors in five seasons of North American professional hockey.Kaut, a former first-round pick in 2018, told the publication that he has had three concussions and two shoulder inj...70 shots fired during Antioch party homicide
