Men and women to use the same ball at the US Open after some women complained about theirs NEW YORK (AP) — Men and women will use the same tennis ball this year at the U.S. Open, satisfying some women who complained last year they were hitting an inferior product.Top-ranked Iga Swiatek — who eventually won the tournament — was among the women who felt their lighter ball didn’t hold its strength as long as the one that was used by men. The U.S. Open had been the only one of the four Grand Slam tournaments that used a different ball for men and women.Stacey Allaster, the U.S. Open’s tournament director, said Thursday that the type of ball being used was entirely up to the players and their tour, and that the U.S. Tennis Association only needed to know their preference after last year’s tournament so enough balls could be ordered from provider Wilson. The request to change was made and will be implemented at this year’s tournament, which starts Aug. 28, on a trial basis.Other changes being implemented include the use of tablets by coaches sitting in th...

Guatemalans to choose between political veteran, surprise outsider in presidential runoff GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — For much of Guatemala’s troubled electoral campaign, authorities seemed determined to limit voters’ options to a range of presidential hopefuls unlikely to shake up a corrupt political system, keeping several candidates seen as threats off the ballot. In part, the strategy seemed to work. The man leading polls a month before the first round election in June was kept off the ballot, and three-time candidate and former first lady Sandra Torres, an opponent-turned-ally of outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei, was the lead vote-getter in the vote, sending her to Sunday’s presidential runoff. But one candidate campaigning against the system had flown so far under the radar that no one paid attention to him until he finished second in the June vote. Now Bernardo Arévalo is facing off against Torres on Sunday with polls suggesting he could very well win. Arévalo’s success appeared to rattle authorities. Almost immediately, a court ordered a review of pre...

No. 10 Washington begins last season in Pac-12 as a contender for the conference title SEATTLE (AP) — Washington’s first season with both coach Kalen DeBoer and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was a magical ride that put the Huskies back on the national stage.Their second season comes with a straightforward goal — win the Pac-12 one last time before Washington takes up residence in the Big Ten.“That would be big. That would definitely be something that would be remembered for a long time,” Penix said. “It’s just a blessing to be here. This conference is amazing.”One of the original members of the Pacific Coast Conference more than a century ago, the 10th-ranked Huskies will begin their final season as part of the premier conference on the West Coast with a legitimate chance at a conference title. HRW and UN experts separately single out Sudanese paramilitary with accusations of sexual violence CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s powerful paramilitary has been singled out by leading rights group and 30 United Nations experts with accusations of rape and sexual violence against women in separate statements Thursday, as the war-torn country enters its fourth month of conflict.Sudan plunged into chaos on Apr.15 when months of simmering tensions between the military and its rival, the Rapid Support Forces exploded into open fighting. The New York-based Human Rights Watch said the paramilitary group apparently targeted women and girls in the western Darfur region of non-Arab ethnicity as well as activists recording human rights abuses during the conflict. It said it documented 78 victims of rape between April 24 and June 26. U.N. officials warned in June that the fighting in Darfur has taken an ethnic dimension, with the RSF and allied militias targeting African communities. Darfur was the scene of genocidal war in the early 2000s when state-backed Arab militias known as the Janjaweed w...

To hit, or to not hit 100 degrees

To hit, or to not hit 100 degrees DENVER (KDVR) — Denver was so close to hitting 100 degrees Wednesday. The Mile High City was one degree shy of hitting that triple-digit mark. But the question remains: Will we see a 100-degree day this summer? Starting in 1872, the National Weather Service said Denver has hit triple-digits in 105 of the last 149 years. Since 2016, Denver's consistently hit 100 degrees. Most recently, there have been more and more 100-degree days. In 2022, Denver had five. How often does Denver hit 100 degrees or hotter? The last time Denver missed the triple-digit mark was in 2015, and it's looking to be the same case this year, according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels. "I think because we've had so many storms earlier in the season that the heat we got wasn't able to just sit and stay because storms would come in the afternoon and cool us off," said Michels. Aug. 16 was the hottest day of 2023 so far with a high of 99 degrees. That's not to say it's impossible. While most of the...

Putin fails again as Europe’s gas storage hits 90 percent The EU’s reserves of natural gas hit a historic high Thursday, filling up well in advance of the winter heating season as the bloc continues its dash away from Russian energy dependence. That leaves the Kremlin scrambling to plug a gaping hole in its finances left by its decision to cut off European customers in the wake of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year. But less Russian gas also opens the EU to the bigger price fluctuations of the global market for liquefied natural gas (LNG).Gas Infrastructure Europe said Thursday that member countries’ gas stores are now at 90.12 percent capacity — breezing past the 90 percent filling target that Brussels is legally required to meet by November. “Today’s confirmation that we have met our gas storage requirements so far ahead of schedule underlines that the EU is well-prepared for winter and this will help to further stabilize markets in the coming months,” the bloc’s Energy Commissioner Kadri Simso...
