Broncos report card: Ugly marks all around after Denver offense goes dark for 25 minutes, defense battered in 31-21 loss to Jets

Offense — FWhat is it going to take for the Broncos offense to start a second half in rhythm? They’ve deferred the coin toss each of the first five games this year and those half-openers have finished in four three-and-outs and a missed field goal. Sean Payton’s offense netted minus-16 yards on four third-quarter possessions against the Jets. Even two drives that stalled inside the New York 5-yard line in the first half looked pretty by comparison.Denver ran it all over New York early on and then did nothing — for long stretches literally less than nothing — most of the rest of the afternoon. Wilson mounted a 75-yard touchdown drive to get the Broncos within 24-21 with 4:44 to go, but then fumbled about 20 yards short of field goal range in the final minute. Ouch. He got battered all day by a barrage of pressure and hits from the Jets’ dominating front four.Defense — DThe best thing to be said about Vance Joseph’s group on Sunday is that it didn’t allow a touchdown to the Jets in th...Broncos four downs: Denver has now lost to Zach Wilson twice at home. Initial thoughts from Broncos’ 31-21 loss to the New York Jets in Week 5 at Empower Field at Mile High:Snowcapped helmets: It’s time. Time to bring back the D. It just feels right. The flying Bronco had his time. And it was glorious. Four Super Bowl trips. Three Lombardi Trophies. John Elway’s helicopter run. Von Miller tugging on Superman’s cape. But it just isn’t the D. The Broncos’ Snowcapped helmets were a nice reminder of that Sunday, even if the all-orange pants and tops that accompanied them were a complete abomination. The old is new again, and it should be here to stay.Feelin’ Jaleel: Five games in, there is no longer a debate. Jaleel McLaughlin is Denver’s most explosive running back, and getting him the ball 12-15 times a game should be a top priority. Head coach Sean Payton appeared to agree Sunday (at least early on). The undrafted free agent was the first running back on the field, and he had eight touches for 83 yards and a to...PHOTOS: Denver Broncos vs. New York Jets in NFL Week 5

CONCORD, N.C. — AJ Allmendinger spoiled NASCAR’s playoffs by winning Sunday’s elimination race on The Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Allmendinger is fantastic and wasn’t going to move over just because he’s not part of the championship field.Allmendinger, who is in his first full season of his Cup return, led 46 laps for Kaulig Racing to win for the first time in NASCAR’s top series since Indianapolis in 2021. Allmendinger, who became a father within the past month, was sobbing when he collected the checkered flag.“Because you don’t know when you are going to do it again,” cried Allmendinger, who turns 42 in December. He said he normally gives the checkered flag away to a fan but was keeping Sunday’s flag for his newborn son.“That was probably the drive of my life,” he said later.Allmendinger then went into the stands to pose for selfies with the fans chanting his name. It was the third Cup Series win for Allmendinger, who has raced across 16 Cup seasons but took a break f...The WNBA will soon call the Bay Area home, but where will their fans go?

OAKLAND — If you’re a Golden State Warriors diehard, finding a sports bar packed with likeminded NBA fans is as easy as asking a friend or hopping on Yelp. Not so for the Bay Area’s committed WNBA watchers. The small handful of fans that carved out a corner on the Athletic Club’s second-floor balcony in downtown Oakland Sunday afternoon called several different bars, emailed a few others, scoured Reddit community boards and even scrolled through a queer LGBTQ dating app in their search — desperate for a space to watch the Las Vegas Aces defend their Championship title in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals against the New York Liberty. While Elyse Widin was frustrated that the community was having to organize itself, they were by no means flabbergasted.“I’m used to it,” Widin said, adding that they had to ask bar management to turn on closed captions so they could follow the action through the din of 30 other screens dominated by the NFL. “That’s just how it goes when you’re n...49ers-Cowboys pregame: Trey Lance reunites with ex-teammates; Randy Gregory inactive

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Colts aren’t sure how much time, if any, rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson might miss after leaving in the first half of Sunday’s 23-16 victory with a right shoulder injury.Coach Shane Steichen said he didn’t know the extent of the injury immediately following the game. Richardson didn’t speak with reporters and was expected to undergo further evaluation Sunday night. The rookie was injured on a 4-yard run with 4:29 left in the first half when he fell awkwardly to the ground with two Tennessee Titans draped around him. Richardson stayed down for several minutes before walking slowly to the injury tent, his shoulder noticeably drooping to the right side. After several more minutes in the injury tent, he headed to the locker room with the team’s medical staff. It’s the third time this season Richardson has been unable to finish a game he started.“I think when you have a dynamic player like him, and, obviously, one of his s...Latest news
